QE-ECF45 Magnetic Eddy Current Flaw Detector

The QE-ECF45 is a portable magnetic/eddy-current nondestructive testing instrument for detecting and assessing stress-corrosion cracks in ferromagnetic structures, including defects beneath corrosion or protective insulating coatings.

Unlike a conventional general-purpose eddy-current instrument, the QE-ECF45 is optimized for pipelines, pressure vessels, structural steel and machinery with rough, corroded, damp or contaminated surfaces. It combines crack detection, crack-depth estimation and coating-thickness monitoring in one field-ready system.

Primary Advantages

  • Detects stress-corrosion cracks beneath coating or corrosion
  • Estimates crack depth from 0.3–5 mm
  • Monitors coating or corrosion thickness during scanning
  • Operates on coarse, damp and contaminated field surfaces
  • Adjustable crack-depth and coating thresholds
  • Visual and audible indication
  • Headphone output for noisy environments
  • Rugged metal electronic enclosure
  • Wear-resistant probe contact surface
  • Lightweight, battery-powered operation

Operating Modes

Combined search and measurement: Locates cracks while estimating depth and monitoring intervening coating or corrosion layers up to approximately 4 mm.

Extended coating search: Screens for crack indications beneath insulating coating up to approximately 10 mm.

Continuous scanning: Provides real-time display and alarm response while the probe moves across the inspection area.

Applicable Standards

The QE-ECF45 may be used within written procedures referencing:

  • ISO 15549:2019 — general principles for eddy-current examination
  • ISO 15548-1:2026 — instrument characteristics and verification
  • ISO 15548-2 — probe characteristics and verification
  • ISO 9712:2021 — qualification and certification of NDT personnel
  • ASTM E376 — magnetic-field and eddy-current coating-thickness measurement

ISO 15548-1:2026 defines characteristics and verification methods for general-purpose eddy-current instruments. ISO 9712:2021 covers qualification and certification of industrial NDT personnel, including eddy-current testing.

These standards do not establish acceptance criteria for stress-corrosion cracking. Inspection requires an approved procedure, representative samples, qualified personnel and engineering acceptance criteria.

Why Choose This Model?

Detect Cracks Through Coating and Corrosion

Screens for stress-corrosion cracks beneath protective coatings or corrosion deposits, reducing unnecessary coating removal.

Detection and Depth Measurement

Identifies relevant crack indications while estimating crack depth from 0.3 to 5 mm under verified inspection conditions.

Designed for Difficult Field Surfaces

Suitable for coarse, corroded, damp and contaminated ferromagnetic surfaces commonly encountered on pipelines and industrial structures.

Simultaneous Coating Monitoring

Monitors intervening coating or corrosion thickness while searching for cracks, helping the operator interpret changing inspection conditions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Crack screening is specified through insulating coating up to approximately 10 mm. Simultaneous depth and coating measurement is intended for layers up to approximately 4 mm.

Often not for initial screening, provided the coating is within the validated inspection procedure. Local removal may still be required for confirmation.

This model is designed primarily for ferromagnetic structures. General-purpose eddy-current equipment should be used for aluminum, copper, titanium and similar materials.

Yes. It is intended for coarse and corroded field surfaces, although loose scale and debris should be removed as permitted by the procedure.

No. Acceptance is determined by the governing inspection procedure and responsible qualified personnel.
